Hello. I am a Control Freak.

Standard

I always figured I was a pretty laid back, easy to please person. And I think, in a lot of ways, I am. When we are going to go out to dinner, I don’t care where we go. If we are going to go on a trip, I do not insist on choosing the route. If we are buying gifts for family members, I am open to sharing the responsibility. I am open to letting other people drive when we go places.  I don’t alphabetize my spice rack.

But about 5 years ago, as I started the process of planning my wedding, I discovered that I was uncomfortable letting anyone else handle any part of the planning process. I planned just about every detail by myself. I laid out every focal area, from the cake table to the buffet table. I did all of it on my dining room table in our apartment, and took pictures of everything. I wanted there to be no question about how things should look.

Even though the hotel that I used for my wedding and reception was willing to provide all of the decorations and do all of the work, I was still unable to let go. I literally laughed in the woman’s face when she suggested that I let her handle everything, and just relax. Ha! Obviously, this woman did not know me. Obviously, I did not know me.

So, I have now embraced my inner control freak.

When we are going to go out to dinner, I don’t care where we go. Except for Chinese. Or any restaurant where they do not serve Dr. Pepper. Or any restaurant where we have had bad service.

If we are going to go on a trip, I do not insist on choosing the route. Except, of course, if I know that my way is better. Or if your route is going to lead us down a way that has too many stop lights.

If we are buying gifts for family members, I am open to sharing the responsibility, unless you want to buy something totally inappropriate.  Or if your idea is just silly. And, of course, I am the judge of that, not you.

I am open to letting other people drive when we go places. Unless your driving scares me. If you tailgate, slam on breaks too often, or jump in and out of lanes, it would be safe to assume that you will not drive me anywhere else again. It is also safe to bet that we will be  in my car. Because, when it is my car, I get to decide when we leave.

I don’t alphabetize my spice rack. I do, however, insist that it be lined up in a totally pleasing way. Which means, that the tallest container is on the left, and the shortest is on the right. As long as the containers follow a left to right descending height order, I am pretty easy about the spice rack.  And yes, if you switch two containers, I will most likely notice  immediately.

See, I am a completely laid back, totally open person. As long as you do things the RIGHT way.
